As 2024 comes to a close, we’re proud to reflect on a year filled with transformation, innovation, and meaningful progress across industries.

Project Title: Receiver & Restructuring Support
Client Overview: The client is a major cannabis operator in Nevada with multiple retail stores and cultivation sites. After experiencing management struggles and financial instability, the company entered receivership in mid-2023.
Project Goals: The goal was to manage the restructuring process, ensure operational stability, protect creditor interests, and oversee the sale of assets.
Challenges Faced & Solutions: Turning around an over-leveraged company in receivership was a significant challenge. Opus streamlined operations, improved cash flow, and protected creditor interests. Clear and constant communication with stakeholders and legal advisors was essential in maintaining operational stability throughout the process.
Outcomes & Impact: The asset sale was successful, preserving operations, keeping stores open, and retaining 80% of the staff. The transition to new owners strengthened the client’s position in the market, ensuring long-term growth.
Lessons Learned: Swift, decisive action and transparent communication with stakeholders are crucial in navigating restructuring processes and ensuring successful outcomes.

Project Title: Fractional CFO Services for Auto Body Shop Post-Acquisition
Client Overview: A private equity firm specializing in investing in privately-owned businesses acquired an auto body shop in New England. The firm recognized the need for strong financial leadership during the transitional phase and engaged Opus Consulting for fractional CFO services.
Project Goals: The goal was to navigate the organization through internal and external changes post-acquisition and position the auto body shop for long-term growth in a competitive automotive repair industry.
Challenges Faced & Solutions: Integrating financial systems and processes from the previous owners into the private equity firm’s expectations was complex. Opus implemented budgeting and forecasting practices to facilitate smooth integration and alignment with the firm’s objectives. Regular on-site presence and communication were key in addressing immediate needs and fostering collaboration.
Outcomes & Impact: Opus improved the financial visibility and reporting for management. Solid budgeting and cash flow management processes were established, positioning the auto body shop for stable growth.
Lessons Learned: Effective collaboration with management is essential during periods of transition. Clear communication and regular check-ins are critical for ensuring alignment and success during uncertain times.

Project Title: New Business Venture Feasibility Study
Client Overview: The client is a Tribal Nation exploring new economic development opportunities and job creation through a proposed manufacturing and retail business venture.
Project Goals: The project’s goal was to provide a comprehensive feasibility study, examining market conditions, 5-year financial projections, regulatory implications, barriers to entry, and recommendations for positioning the Tribe.
Challenges Faced & Solutions: The major challenge was the lack of market data for a business venture that did not yet exist in the state. To overcome this, Opus gathered data from similar markets and made adjustments to ensure findings were relevant to the client’s home market. This required significant data collection, analysis, and extrapolation.
Outcomes & Impact: The study was instrumental in the Tribal nation’s economic development committee’s decision-making process. With the data and analysis provided, the committee could present cost/benefit analyses and market strategies, facilitating an informed discussion on how to proceed with the business venture.

Project Title: Chapter 11 Bankruptcy and Pre-bankruptcy Work
Client Overview: The client is a company preparing to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, facing significant financial challenges and the need for restructuring.
Project Goals: The primary goal was to provide financial projections, rebuild inaccurate financial records, and help create a sustainable financial structure for the company.
Challenges Faced & Solutions: The complexity of the client’s operations—two entities operating as one—created challenges in assessing financial performance and debt obligations. Opus supported the separation of income statements and balance sheets for each entity, utilizing assumptions and diverse data sources to untangle the financial complexity.
Outcomes & Impact: The financial insights Opus provided were critical in informing the decision to file for bankruptcy and for developing a strategic reorganization plan to restore profitability.
Lessons Learned: Accurate, timely financial reporting is essential, particularly for companies considering bankruptcy. A solid financial foundation is necessary to make informed decisions and assess a company’s true financial health.

Project Title: Development of a Vertically Integrated Cannabis Company in Western New York
Client Overview: The client is a sovereign Indigenous group building a vertically integrated cannabis business, including cultivation and retail operations, within New York’s emerging cannabis market.
Project Goals: The goal was to support the client in developing a fully functional cannabis operation, including feasibility studies, facility design, vendor selection, workforce hiring, and retail and cultivation facility openings.
Challenges Faced & Solutions: The region’s limited availability of skilled cannabis cultivators and frontline workers required creative recruitment and training approaches. Another challenge was educating the local market on the benefits of regulated cannabis over unregulated alternatives. Opus addressed these by launching consumer education campaigns and employing targeted workforce development strategies.
Outcomes & Impact: The project has been highly successful. Both the cultivation and retail operations are now running smoothly, with the client gaining a competitive market advantage by avoiding delays in state licensing and maintaining independent regulation. The success has ensured long-term financial benefits for the Indigenous owners and positioned them as leaders in Western New York’s cannabis industry.
Lessons Learned: Successful projects rely on strong collaboration among diverse teams—from cultivators and marketers to tradespeople. Effective communication and organization are essential to achieving operational success and maintaining team morale, especially in a regulated and competitive industry like cannabis.

Project Title: Operational Startup Support for Dispensary in Upstate NY
Client Overview: This client is a small adult-use dispensary in upstate New York. I began working with them in early 2021 to assist with business planning, financial modeling, the licensing process, and operational startup support.
Project Goals: The overall goal of this project, since its inception, was to ensure a successful launch of the dispensary.
Challenges Faced & Solutions: The licensing path saw several delays due to multiple lawsuits preventing the state from awarding licenses. Additional delays from the application review process also presented challenges. Opus responded by staying prepared and proactive, ensuring the client was ready when the state finally cleared the way for progress.
Outcomes & Impact: The dispensary officially opened its doors in October 2024. I had the privilege of attending their opening day, and I am pleased to report a successful first month of operations. The dispensary has already made a significant positive impact on the local community.
Lessons Learned: I learned that staying prepared during uncertain times can be incredibly beneficial when opportunities arise.
Final Thoughts on the Year: In 2024, I spent significant time working with clients in New York’s adult-use cannabis market. From successful license applications to dispensaries officially opening, it was rewarding to see the market grow in my home state. I’m looking forward to supporting our clients’ cannabis business aspirations in 2025, not just in the Northeast but beyond.

Project Title: Financial Health Analysis for a Family Dairy Farm
Client Overview: Opus Consulting worked with a dairy farm struggling with disorganized financial records and high levels of debt.
Project Goals: The goal was to analyze the farm’s financial situation, clean up its bookkeeping, reduce debt, and identify opportunities for cost reduction and improved profitability.
Challenges Faced & Solutions: The major challenge was the farm’s disorganized bookkeeping, which made assessing its financial health difficult. Opus tackled this by reconciling cash accounts, correcting discrepancies, and creating accurate debt schedules. We also focused on refinancing high-interest loans and identifying cost-reduction strategies.
Outcomes & Impact: The farm’s financial records were significantly cleaned up, giving a clearer picture of its financial health. By reducing debt and optimizing cash flow, Opus helped the farm avoid further financial distress and laid the foundation for sustainable profitability.
Lessons Learned: Regular and accurate bookkeeping is essential for understanding a business’s financial health. Without a clear view of cash flow and debt, making sound decisions becomes much harder and could lead to unnecessary financial strain.
