Danielle Nickless: My Summer Internship

Aug 14, 2014

This summer I had the privilege of being the summer intern at Opus Consulting Group.  I am a Marketing major who is going to be a sophomore at Bryant University in Smithfield, RI.  This summer I learned the basics of bookkeeping, accounting, and marketing at Opus.  I was given a wealth of knowledge that will surely be useful in my future career.

Being a Marketing major, I did not know what to expect of the internship.  I had taken basic courses in accounting and figured I knew enough to do “simple” bookkeeping.  However, what I came to find out was that there is so much for me to learn and I am so grateful for being able to be a student of the trade.

Now that my internship is coming to a close I have been reflecting on some of the things that I learned while working at Opus.  I was able to grasp simple business practices and learn what does and what does not work for small businesses.  It is one thing to learn about business in a class and it is another thing to experience it.  I know that I will be able to continue with my education with an understanding that many of my fellow classmates did not have the opportunity to attain.

I found it interesting to see how basic accounting principles played out in the everyday functions of basic bookkeeping.  Everything that I could not grasp in school was suddenly making perfect sense.  However, what I found most important was organization.  Opus is excellent at keeping all records in order, which comes in handy when checking past proceedings.

Everything that I learned has taught me a fuller sense of the business world.  I was able to take a look into the everyday functions of accounting, finance, marketing, and management.  There are very few internships that could have given me a sense of all of these aspects.  My internship ended up being more than I could ever have imagined, and for that I am thankful.
